Not what I'd call cheap is it.
I'd be checking that the thing fits the fire box on the Costco one first. A trip to both stores with a tape measure will soon sort it out.
The Akorn is looking better all the time.

Agree, if you are looking to get into charcoal cooking and wanted a new bbq it is the best value around, especially when they are on special for $250! Even full price they are good value.

I don't think we'll see that again.
So I'm curious, the big ceramic at Costco seems a lot bigger than the little steel akorn. Would the bigger ceramic take longer to heat up, and require a larger fuel load throughout a cook than the smaller unit?
Another poster commented that the steel construction of the akorn would actually have better insulation than the ceramic, in the sense that you don't have to heat up the entire ceramic shell.
The thin KJ heat deflector is indeed the poor cousin to BGE's single reversible thicker ceramics that does not need a stainless cradle to cook up or down.

I will call The Smoke KIng BBQ tomorrow and see if it fits the pit boss from Costco

For what it's worth, I disagree with that opinion. Ceramic holds the heat and insulates well. It's an issue of value for the money and the Akorn is hard to beat on that.
Ceramic is great used as an insulator.
Metal is great used as a conductor.
Why Costco sell a kamado without a deflector is beyond me.
I'm sure there's a cheap paella pan which is the right size for the 24" Pit Boss Kamado. I've been using a paella pan as a heat deflector for over 5 years as the BSK also didn't include one. It's finally giving up the ghost so I'll have to find another cheap paella pan

This is the difference, two different thoughts on keeping the temperature inside where you are cooking.
The Steel Kamado is insulated. Steel is transparent to heat, that's how your frying pan works, no matter how thick, steel will not insulate, heat one side the heat just radiates off the other side. It takes a thick sheet of metal a long time to heat up and a long time to cool down, but while it is going, it is shedding heat, just the same as thinner metal will.
Steel Kamados are double skinned with insulation in between, the new Weber Summit Charcoal is also double skinned but with Air between the layers (like a thermos) acting as the insulator. Here the idea is to trap heat inside the cooker and lower fuel consumption as a result.
The ceramic Kamados store heat in the shell, the ceramic takes time to heat as the heat energy takes time to travel through the ceramic, but eventually it starts to shed heat from the hot outside of the shell.
The Steel and the ceramic are both airtight and both hold heat inside the cooker, the steel sheds less heat and consumes a little less fuel maintaining temperature, but the real difference comes in being able to let that stored heat out, if you ceramic over runs it is difficult to drop the temperature because you are fighting the heat stored in the shell. With the steel, you can choke the fire, and let the stored heat out by opening the lid for a few moments at a time being careful not to be open too long or the fire will recharge.
Which is better? Neither! They are both great, just slightly different in the way they let you manage heat.
Great stuff. Don't tell me that this passion of ours is starting to take off !
