The first rule is to get the grill off your flamable deck. Logs sputter, create sparks, and can burn down your house. Wear shoes, not sandals. Build a fire as if you were making a campfire. The second rule is to stand by your grill. The bigger the grill, the better so you can use the usual 2-zone system. Leave the lid off. The smoke can get thick, and with the lid on it can precipitate as soot.
