G'day all,
I was cooking up a lamb shoulder in the GMG Daniel Boone today (no pictures - didn't happen, I know ). At the completion of the cook I did a few temperature correlations between the onboard sensor and the maverick 732 to see what the difference was. I ran the Booney up to it's max temp of 260C and left it there for about 10 minutes, then I dropped the temps down by about 50C and let it settle at each temp for about 10 minutes before dropping it down again. I finished off in Fan mode and after it cooled down I removed the guts and checked the firebox and found that it was about half full of ash, is that a normal amount? Prior to the cook I vacuumed it to remove any ash, so it was pretty well spotless to start with., so the only ash in there was from today's cook.
Thanks for looking.
How much ash?

I'm using Pacific pellets at the moment.

Thanks Chris,
I wasn't sure how much was a 'normal' amount.
I was using that adjustment in the app when I was comparing the temps between the Mav and the DB. I have V 2.3.4, is that the latest? -

Not sure what is the current version...I'd have to check. When I upgraded mine a week or two ago there were two choices Update and Prototype....I went Prototype.

Wow, that’s a lot of ash. I clean mine out every 8 or so bags and get about 1 1/2 to 2 litres of ash IIRC

Perfectly normal lovey

yeah sounds about right to me. Cranking it up to 260c is going to chew through a tonne of pellets in a short time.
Did you like the pacific pellets?

Thanks everyone for your replies, you've put my mind at ease.
@Swamptrout I don't have enough cooks under my belt to say that one pellet is better than another, but they seem ok.
I've now got 3 different brands in my stash (120ish kg ) and several different varieties/flavours within these brands, so I'd better get cracking on some cooks.
As an aside, would the height of the chimney cap make a lot of difference to how much ash is left?
Thanks again all. -

Chimney cap is not a variable it must be set to two fingers height.....it's actually just a rain cap, max airflow is what you want.

Thanks Chris,
you're worth more money.
